The Doctor Returns…..

It seems like for the past 9 months I have been counting down to the big day and yesterday the DOCTOR finally returned!  I have been so excited to see Peter Capaldi as the new Doctor and he did not disappoint.  Watch out David Tennent…. Capaldi my very well become my favorite Doctor.  In the past we always go through that transition of oh a NEW Doctor…. “I don’t think I like him…”  then we think… “Ok this guys not so bad…”  finally its “He’s the only actor that could ever play the Doctor…”

But with Capaldi I feel like I just completely skipped the first two phases and “He is the only actor that could EVER play the Doctor!” Well and maybe Tom Baker 🙂

To celebrate the premier of the new season of Doctor Who last night I had my sister Katie over.  Over the past year this has become a tradition of ours to throw a party for Doctor Who events… This was us for the 50th Anniversary back in November.  I was Amy Pond and she was The Doctor.  We always have fun.

Last night for the premier of the new season of Doctor Who and the “New” Doctor Peter Capaldi I made cupcakes.  But not just any cupcakes…. Oh No!  These are Blue Velvet, Cream filled cupcakes.

Please don’t judge me, but I love boxed cake mix and I’ve learned when it come to dying something blue… It’s not easy to get the right color.  So when I found that Betty Crocker made a Blue Velvet Cake mix, it made me VERY happy.  I added about 10 extra drops of blue food coloring to these to enhance the Blue color just a bit.

Now the Cream filling I made…

Cream Filling

1/4 Cup Vegetable Shortening (Crisco)

1/4 Cup Room Temperature

2 Cups Powdered Sugar (sifted)

1 Teaspoon of Vanilla

A pinch of salt.

In a large bowl beat the Crisco and butter until light and fluffy.  Add in the vanilla and the salt.  Then while beating on low-speed slowly add in the powdered sugar.  Once all the powdered sugar is incorporated scrape the bowl down to make sure everything is well mixed.

Then to fill the cupcakes….

Place the cream filling in a pastry bag or a plastic zip top bag fitted with a large round decorating tip.  Then shove the metal tip into the center of the cupcake and squeeze in the cream filling.  Place the filled cupcakes in the refrigerator until you are ready to ice them.

For the icing I did a basic Cream Cheese icing…

Cream Cheese Icing

2-8oz Packages of Cream Cheese ( softened)

1/2 Cup Butter (softened)

1 teaspoon of Vanilla

2-1/2 Cups Powdered Sugar (sifted)

3 Tablespoons of Milk

A Pinch of Salt

Place the cream cheese and the butter in the bowl of an electric mixer. Cream together until fluffy.  Slowly add in the powdered sugar while beating on low speed.  Once all the powdered sugar is incorporated add the vanilla, milk and the pinch of salt.  Mix until everything is combined.

Frost the cupcakes as desired.  I used a large star tip and pastry bag for this occasion 🙂

Store the frosted cupcakes in the refrigerator until ready to eat.

A couple of weeks ago I ordered 2 Doctor Who TARDIS and Dalek Ice Cube/Chocolate silicon molds online. Each tray makes 3 Daleks and 3 TARDIS.

To make my chocolates… I purchased colored chocolate melting wafers in Blue, Red, Yellow, White and Chocolate.  I also found some really cool round metallic sprinkles I used for the dalak eye’s and arms.  Then using a toothpick I carefully filled in the details of the molds.  After that, you just pour in the melted chocolate and let them set up in the refrigerator.

Since the molds came in I’ve had Doctor Who Ice Cubes in my cocktails and I’ve been making Doctor Who Chocolates. I might have made enough Daleks to form a small army…

“Oh No DOCTOR! The Daleks have the TARDIS!!!”

Ok so maybe I was having a little too much fun…….

Look it’s a Dalek ice cube!

Last night to go along with the other Doctor Who festivities I made Fresh Appletini’s…  As you can see there are no neon green mixers in this just fresh Apple juice.

Fresh Appletini

3 Parts Fresh Apple Juice

1 Part Vodka

1/2 Part St. Germain

Place all the ingredients in a shaker filled with ice and shake.  Then pour into a chilled glass.

In the end what did I do with all of these Doctor Who Chocolates and Cupcakes???

Let’s just say Katie and I exterminated them…..

If there are any other Doctor Who fans out there reading this I would love to know what you though of Capaldi’s performance and “Deep Breath”.
